In 1 John 5:4-5 it says, “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
The Bible calls believers in Christ “overcomers.” As women who believe in Christ as our Lord and Savior, we are called “overcomers.” But the key word here is “believer.” If we are Christian women who aren’t living our lives believing what the Word of God says then we cannot truly be an overcomer — instead we will be defeated, overwhelmed and overcome by life! It takes faith to truly be an overcomer! 1 John says our faith is the victory that has overcome the world! Our faith is critical here! Faith is victory. Christ has already overcome the world, but our faith partners with that truth and activates His overcoming power in our everyday lives.
Just like you, I can feel overwhelmed and overcome a lot of the days in the week! But I turn to the Word of God to tell me who I am, and then I believe what it says. Repentance means “to turn,” to say ‘Hey maybe I don’t know everything and maybe all my feelings aren’t true. Jesus, I’m sorry for thinking I knew it all — please help me!’
God has made us overcomers in and through Christ because there is much to overcome in life! There is victory when we partner with Christ and receive His power that is freely given through the cross. Overcoming our challenges doesn’t come from striving but rather from receiving. Let’s be women who are humble and wise enough to kneel and bow our heads and ask our all powerful, all-loving, completely generous Father to give us the spirit of an overcomer in all we do! And then let’s walk out our lives knowing and believing that it’s He that has overcome the world and, as His Daughters, we too are overcomers.
